About the Project
The project at Johns Hill, Waterford is a new 100-bed residential care facility in the grounds of St. Patrick’s Hospital. COADY were appointed by the HSE to provide full architectural services, including Design & Assigned Certifier for the new Residential Care Centre.
The site was originally developed in 1841 for the Waterford Union Workhouse and is a protected structure. All structures within the curtilage have protected status and four structures (including part of the boundary wall) are listed on the National Inventory of Architectural Heritage.
The new 7,671sqm development comprises of 2 households of 30 beds, 2 households of 20 beds, a patient roof terrace, a full production kitchen and related community spaces. The new unit links with the existing hospital via a glazed link to the north, and directly with the western end of the mortuary chapel – a protected structure – refurbished internally and externally, forming a new main entrance and foyer for the hospital and the new residential care unit.
